siren eun young jung (정은영) réalise des œuvres qui explorent le potentiel subversif des pratiques culturelles populaires et mettent en lumière l’existence de communautés qui, encore aujourd’hui, préservent des espaces de dissemblance et de non-conformité au sein de la société. Depuis 2008, elle mène un projet au long cours sur le Yeoseong Gukgeuk (여성국극), un « théâtre traditionnel des femmes » né en Corée après la colonisation japonaise, et qui a connu une grande popularité dans les années 1950 et 1960. Loin de chercher à restaurer ou légitimer une « tradition » oubliée de l’histoire culturelle nationale, jung adopte une approche militante pour explorer les expériences et les sentiments liés à l’éloignement des normes sociales et artistiques.

정은영은 한국에서 해방 직후 형성되어 1950-60년대에 큰 성공을 거둔 이례적 여성공연 장르인 “여성국극“을 연구해왔다. 2008년 이후부터 현재까지 약 15년에 걸친 장기간의 리서치 프로젝트인 <여성국극 프로젝트>는 대중문화속의 전복적 잠재력을 탐구하는 한편, 과거부터 현재에 이르기까지 당대의 이질성과 파격을 가꾸는 공동체를 조명하고 있다. 작가는 한국 문화사에서 오랫동안 잊혀져 있던 “전통”인 여성국극을 다루면서도 그것을 복원하거나 복권하는 것에 관심을 두지는 않는다.

siren eun young jung (정은영) makes work that explores the subversive potential of popular cultural practices and highlights the existence of communities that, to this day, maintain spaces for dissimilarity and non-conformity within a given society. Since 2008, she has been involved in a long-term project on Yeoseong Gukgeuk (여성국극), a “traditional women’s theatre” formed in Korea following the Japanese colonization, which became very popular in the 1950s and 1960s. Far from trying to restore or legitimize a long-forgotten “tradition” of national cultural history, jung, through her activist approach, explores the experience of and feelings about distancing oneself from social and artistic norms.
